TV Show/Book/Film/Franchise: StarCraft
Description
Communal race composed of many other races gathered into an insectoid swarm or alternately, pack minded reptilians that evolve by absorbing the essence of their prey. Sizes vary widely from coin sized Lichen to the moon sized Leviathan. The largest combat land zerg is the Ultralisk strains at triple elephant size minimum while the smallest common Zerg is likely the Larva at double the size of a Chihuahua. The serpent like Hydralisks are twice the size of a full grown human while most Infested are roughly the size of their pre infested forms. Due to the expansion abilities that allow transport of Ultralisks, it's hard to say if Overlords are larger or smaller than their surveillance based evolution, the Overseer. Another hard to size Zerg strain is the Nidus Worm that is used in combination with a nest and tunnel network to rapidly move between distant Hive clusters on the same planet.
Abilities
Vary widely but always include adaptability, regeneration, and telepathy. Ground strains usually have burrow to quickly hide beneath the ground. The 'Overmind' and Broodmothers as well as the Infestors can all infest living creatures to create new Zerg
Race Persona
Depends on the leader with the male lead faction being militaristic yet friendly while the female led faction is the very essence of an all consuming swarm.
Social Customs
The Lord of Blades guides his swarm and associated packs in a form of militaristic altruism constantly striving to make everyone and everything a better fighter for their own protection while the Queen of Blades seems to follow six out of seven deadly sins....wait, make that all seven since consuming all creation, regardless of reason, likely counts as gluttony.
Language
The more intelligent members use English for spoken, mental and written language while the less intelligent use growls, roars, and various insect sounds for spoken language and don't use written or mental language.
Hierarchy
Lead by an 'Overmind' who originally only lead the insectile swarm. Current Overmind for two separate swarms is the Lord of Blades and his predecessor the Queen of Blades. Beneath this is the outdated Cerebrate, the Pack Alpha or a Broodmother followed by Overlords who lead 'field commander' level strains and then the 'general infantry' strains such as the Zergling or the mighty Ultralisk.
Tech and science
No tech per say, the Zerg are 100% biological but have some of the most advanced science in the universe.
Transportation
With no tech, the Zerg rely on specially bred strains such as the balloon like Overlords or the moon sized Leviathans if they need to move over terrain they are not personally evolved to handle. (Leviathans deal with space 'terrain')
Spiritual Beliefs
The Swarms follow the beliefs of their leaders with the Lord of Blades being Christian while the Queen of Blades is either pagan, worshiping the Xel'Naga much like the Protoss of the Koprulu sector, or Atheist.
